Client: Westminster C of E Primary School
Principal Contractor: R.H. Fullwood & Co Ltd.
Scope Of Works: Demolition, Groundworks & Car Park
Works Completed: September 2014

The state funded Westminster C of E Primary School is located in Bradford, with an ethos of providing education of the highest quality within the context of Christian belief and practice. Following a report by Bradford Council’s Services to Children and Young People, it was found that there were insufficient of primary school places across the district.

A plan was put in place to create 700 new places across the district, with Westminster C of E Primary School seeing its intake increase by 50% to accommodate up to 90 new pupils. In order to handle the increase in pupils a large extension was planned. In addition, a new car park was required to allow enough spaces for the increase in traffic levels.

YPP Groundworks was invited by R.H. Fullwood & Co. Ltd. to submit a tender for the required groundworks, including the demolition of an existing classroom where the proposed extension was to be located. We were successful in our tender and began work in July 2014.

The scope of YPP Groundworks’ work consisted of:

  • Demolition and removal of existing classroom
  • Installation of Gabion basket retaining walls
  • Installation of strip foundations for large extension
  • 3 metre deep drainage system and relevant shoring
  • Installation of Raft slab reinforced foundations
  • Installation of 7,600 litre forecourt oil separating tank
  • Construction of 1,000m2 tarmac car park

It was recognised from the beginning that the project would be challenging, as the ground where the extension was to be located was solid rock. However, upon commencement of the work it was discovered that the area of solid rock was much larger than initially believed. We were also required to excavate past existing live services in several locations. Despite the challenges, we were able to chip away at the rock to achieve the foundation level. Work was completed on August 2014 and the school extension opened in September 2014 as scheduled.
